How to start an online store, step by step

6 min read

Launching a store is less about one big decision and more about a sequence of small, correct ones. Here's a practical path.

1. Decide what you sell and to whom

Nail the product and the audience before the pixels. A tight niche is easier to market than "everything for everyone".

2. Choose a platform

Pick something that includes what you'll need soon — payments, analytics, tax — rather than a stack you'll assemble later. See our guide on choosing a platform.

3. Build the catalog

Add products with clear titles, good photos and accurate stock. Variants (size, colour) should map cleanly to SKUs.

4. Set up payments and tax

Turn on a payment method and make sure tax is correct for where you sell — especially if you'll cross borders.

5. Launch, then measure

Ship it, then watch the numbers. First-party analytics tell you where shoppers drop and what to fix first.
